If you have an old vehicle that you do not drive anymore, you have likely thought about having it removed from your property if you do not wish to sell it privately. Whether you bring the vehicle to an auto junkyard yourself or have it picked up to be hauled away by a company, there are a few steps to take beforehand to ensure a smooth transaction.

Find An Auto Junkyard That Pays

Most automobile junkyards will pay customers who release vehicles to their businesses. The amount you receive from an auto junkyard is dependent upon the standard price for scrap metal at the time that the vehicle's ownership is transferred. This amount may vary slightly from business to business, so be sure to check out more than one auto junkyard to ensure you are getting the most possible for your vehicle. Inquire about the cost associated with pickup from a tow truck to bring the vehicle to an auto junkyard's property if the auto junkyard provides this service. If you are unable to transport the vehicle yourself, many junkyards will offer this service. Make sure the amount you receive for the vehicle for its metal content is more than the cost of a tow so you do not need to pay for the service out-of-pocket.

Remove Personal Items From The Vehicle

Before you release your vehicle to an auto junkyard's possession, you need to remove your personal effects from the interior of the vehicle, as they will become the property of the business after the transaction is completed. Check your trunk, glove compartment, and drawers underneath seats for contained items. If you wish to keep your stereo, GPS system, or other electronic devices you had used in your vehicle, they need to be dismantled and taken out before relinquishment. Do not forget the license plate frame or antennae decor.

Find Out About Legal Paperwork

Some auto junkyards will require you to provide them with an official title of ownership of the vehicle you wish to leave or bring to their property. If you do not have this paperwork, you can apply for a new title, or you can have the vehicle brought to another auto junkyard that does not require that this document be turned over to them. It is important to inquire about this detail when you contact an auto junkyard so you are prepared at the time the vehicle is picked up or dropped off.
